What Is Root Canal Treatment?
Inside every tooth is a soft area called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. If decay, a crack or an old injury lets bacteria reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. This often causes throbbing pain, sensitivity to hot drinks, pain when biting, or a swelling or abscess.
Root canal treatment (also called endodontic treatment or a root filling) removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals and then seals them, stopping the infection and allowing the tooth to stay in place.
How Root Canal Treatment Works at Our Littleover Practice
First, your dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the shape of the roots and how far the infection has spread. The tooth is then numbed with local anaesthetic, so the treatment itself should feel no worse than having a filling.
The dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the canals and fills them with a sealing material. Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two visits. Back teeth that have had a root filling are often weaker, so we may recommend a dental crown to protect the tooth for the long term.
If a case is particularly complex, we may refer you to a specialist endodontist and will explain why.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is root canal treatment painful?
The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so most patients say it feels similar to having a filling. It usually relieves the pain caused by the infection. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal.
How many appointments will I need?
Most root canal treatments are completed in one or two appointments. Molars with several canals can take longer.
Is it better to have the tooth taken out?
Keeping your natural tooth is usually the best option for chewing and for the health of the teeth around it. Your dentist will discuss the pros and cons of root canal treatment and extraction with you.
Will I need a crown after a root filling?
Back teeth often need a crown afterwards because they become more brittle. Front teeth may only need a filling. We will tell you what is best for your tooth.
Do you offer root canal treatment for new patients?
Yes. New patients are welcome. Call 01332 776177 to book a consultation at our practice on Littleover Lane, Derby.
