What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that is placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Once it has bonded with the bone, it supports a crown, bridge or denture. Implants do not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support and help to preserve the jawbone.
Implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth or support a full set of teeth. They are also a stable alternative for patients who struggle with loose dentures.
Implant Treatment at Our Littleover Practice
Implant treatment at our practice is provided by Dr Zaman Qayyum, a dentist with a special interest in implantology, who joins the Littleover Dental Practice team in October 2026. Zaman qualified from King's College London in 2013 and holds a Master's degree in Oral Implantology. His experience includes single and multiple implants, implant-supported bridges, immediate implant placement and bone and soft-tissue reconstruction.
Treatment begins with a detailed assessment, including X-rays and a full check of your gums and bone. You will receive a clear treatment plan explaining each stage, the timescale and the cost. The implant is placed under local anaesthetic and, once healed, your new crown is fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Am I suitable for dental implants?
Most adults with healthy gums and enough jawbone are suitable. Smoking, gum disease and some medical conditions can affect healing, so we will check this at your assessment.
Does implant surgery hurt?
Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Most patients manage any discomfort afterwards with everyday painkillers.
How long does implant treatment take?
From placement to the final crown, treatment usually takes a few months while the implant bonds with the bone. Your dentist will give you a personal timeline.
How long do dental implants last?
With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years and often for life. The crown on top may need replacing over time.
Can implants support dentures?
Yes. Implant-supported dentures clip onto implants, making them much more secure than conventional dentures.
